The Big Dig - A Huge Success!

On February 11, 2017, more than 130 volunteers joined Friends of Gateway Green and Northwest Trail Alliance for the first Big Dig event at the Dirt Lab. The full day event allowed for major progress at the park and a huge step towards our fast-approaching Grand Opening of the bike features in the park (June 24).

Over the course of the day, volunteers beautified the park by collecting more than 30 large bags of trash, pulling more than 10,000 square feet of ivy, and liberating more than a dozen trees from ivy overgrowth. Volunteers also made major headway in finishing up parts of some trails, including technical features.

The volunteers’ hard work was fueled by food, beverages, and raffle prizes that were generously donated by our sponsors: NWTA, FoGG, Metro, Portland Parks and Recreation, Lumberyard, REI, Fat Tire Farm, Portland Design Works, Keen, Starbucks, Frito Lay, St. Honore Bakery, and Clif Bar.

The event was a huge success in every way; from making new friends and enjoying the amazing weather, to doing our part to make this park a reality! Everyone’s efforts were greatly appreciated, and we are excited to be holding monthly work parties soon.
